While we strive to preserve your natural smile, there are situations where tooth extraction may be essential for your overall oral health and well-being.
Common reasons for tooth extraction may include:
- An over-retained baby tooth can lead to significant dental issues if it remains in place for too long. Typically, baby teeth fall out naturally to make way for permanent teeth. However, if a baby tooth stays firmly attached, it may be due to its roots not dissolving properly or the tooth being fused to the bone. This can affect the development and alignment of your child's smile. We will monitor the situation and advise if extraction is needed to ensure the permanent tooth erupts correctly.
- Severely decayed or damaged teeth that cannot be saved might require extraction by a dentist. Even minor defects on the enamel can gradually harm the tooth’s structure, potentially leading to serious issues like nerve damage, dental infections, and broader health problems.
- Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often present challenges due to their position and the space available for eruption. They are the last to emerge and commonly face issues such as insufficient space, improper growth, or decay. It’s often advisable to extract problematic wisdom teeth in young adults to avoid complications later.
- Severe fractures or cracks in a tooth can sometimes be beyond repair. The type and extent of the damage will determine whether the tooth can be saved or if extraction is necessary.
- In cases where there is not enough space in the jaw for all permanent teeth, overcrowding and misalignment can occur. To achieve a properly aligned and functional bite, removing some permanent teeth may be necessary as part of orthodontic treatment.
