You may have noticed that kids seem to be getting braces and other orthodontic care a lot earlier these days. There was a time, only a decade or two ago, when braces were mainly seen on teenagers, but that is beginning to change. If you’re wondering when to bring your child to our Houston dental office for an orthodontic evaluation, the answer has several parts.

The Telltale Signs to Watch For

If your child has a very crowded set of adult teeth coming in, or if their permanent front teeth appear very early, these are visible warning signs that it’s time to visit our orthodontist in Houston for a personalized evaluation before minor issues escalate.

Understanding Dental Age vs. Chronological Age

Barring obvious signs of trouble or early adult teeth, the exact time your child needs an initial orthodontic evaluation depends less on their actual chronological age and more on what is known as dental age.

The dental age of a young patient can be entirely different from their actual age—for example, an eight-year-old child could have a dental age of 13 based on their jaw development and tooth eruption. It is part of our clinical team’s job to accurately determine this dental age and make appropriate, timely recommendations for resolving emerging orthodontic issues.

The Official Recommended Age

The American Association of Orthodontists officially recommends that children see an orthodontist for their first evaluation between the ages of seven and nine. Even if a child does not yet have all of their permanent teeth, a trained orthodontist can effectively predict future growth patterns and tooth alignment.

This proactive approach allows for early intervention, which is why some younger children now receive specialized orthodontic devices earlier in life. If a young child has serious bite or spacing issues emerging, the team at The Village Dentistry can address these problems during a first phase of treatment, followed by a lighter second phase once all adult teeth have erupted.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the benefit of early interceptive orthodontic treatment? Early interceptive treatment (often called Phase 1 orthodontics) allows orthodontists to guide jaw growth, correct harmful oral habits like thumb-sucking, create room for crowded incoming adult teeth, and reduce the risk of needing teeth pulled or complex corrective jaw surgery later in life.

Does an early evaluation always mean my child will get braces immediately? No, absolutely not. In most cases, an early evaluation between ages seven and nine simply allows the orthodontist to monitor your child’s natural growth and development. Often, no immediate treatment is needed, and the orthodontist will simply recommend periodic observation visits every 6 to 12 months until the optimal time for treatment arrives.

What are the common signs that my child needs to see an orthodontist early? Key red flags include early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing or biting, mouth breathing, thumb-sucking past age five, crowded or overlapping front teeth, jaw shifting when speaking or closing the mouth, or protruding upper teeth.
